5 Easy Ways to Better Manage Your Time During the Holidays

The holidays are the one time of the year when most of my clients feel stressed and overwhelmed – so little time, so much to do! This year, focus the great time management skills you yield with ease at work on your personal life.

Here are 5 ways to manage your time, reduce your stress level, and actually enjoy the holidays:

Learn how to say “no”

The holidays are busy enough without adding even one event or party to the calendar. Heartily accept the events you can’t wait to attend and gracefully decline the ones that you dread or don’t have time for. You don’t need to explain why you are declining, either. If pressed, just say, “We are booked that weekend,” and leave it at that.

Prioritize, aka, rethink what you “have” to do

Do you really have to make 10 varieties of cookies rather than the 3 your family truly loves? Do you really have to buy every gift in person rather than online? Do you really have to handmake gifts for teachers, the babysitter, the housecleaner, and the guy who tends your yard when they’d probably prefer cash or a gift card to Target?

Simplify where you can

This is related to the previous tip. You don’t really have to do everything. Cull your holiday card list of people you haven’t heard from in years. Rethink the urge to decorate every surface in your house if it leaves you exhausted. Pay to have your gifts wrapped if you hate doing it yourself. There’s a reason outsourcing is so popular!

Ask for help

Don’t try to do everything yourself – there’s no need to run yourself into the ground. Enlist your spouse, kids, friends, and family to help, whether it’s to decorate the house, wrap gifts, address envelopes, or prepare food for a holiday meal or party.

Make a list and check it twice

If you are still feeling overwhelmed, make a list of everything you have to do (or want to do) and block out time for each activity on your personal calendar. You’ll most likely see that you have plenty of time to do the things you want to do, even if it means holding off on certain things (like going ice skating) til after the new year.

What other advice do you have to share for better managing time when there’s so much going on?
