5 Ways To Turbocharge Your Motivation in 2014

How many people wake up on a Wednesday in May, and think, “I am going to improve my life?” Probably not as many who woke up on a recent Wednesday, which also happened to be New Year’s Day, thinking the same thing.

If you’d like to achieve more this year, whether in your personal or professional life, you will need to boost your motivation. Here are 5 ideas, inspired by Brian Johnson’s PhilosophersNotes and his take on the book, 100 Ways to Motivate Yourself by Steve Chandler.

Focus on the task at hand

The thought of achieving a big, hairy, audacious goal can be so daunting that you end up paralyzed, more focused on failing than succeeding. Instead, focus on what you need to do right now, not tomorrow or next month.

Do work with a purpose

As alluded to above, we need solid plans that are purposeful and move us towards our goal. If we don’t, we’ll suffer from what Chandler calls “intention deficit disorder.” Instead of real work, we’ll do busy work.

Work on meaningful projects

Happy people have projects. They have a purpose. They have dreams and aspirations that they are working towards. When you are working on something meaningful for you, you are completely absorbed in the task, achieving one thing after another, you settle into a nice do-succeed-motivate cycle.

Become an optimistic thinker

Chandler has a great suggestion in his book: “Pretend you’re an attorney whose job is to prove the pessimist in you wrong. Start off on building your case for what’s possible.” By arguing against what’s “impossible,” you’ll not only argue for what is possible, but you’ll become an optimistic thinker along the way.

Stop worrying and start doing

Worrying gets you nowhere; taking action does. Instead of worrying, think about what you can do right now to fix the situation. It can be something big or small – it doesn’t matter. Just doing something is a great reminder that you can affect change – and that is a great motivator.

What do you do to motivate yourself, especially when facing major challenges or obstacles?  What can you differently this year to make this even better than last year?
