11 Questions That Can Boost Your Self-Awareness and Improve Your Leadership Skills

Successful leaders know how to talk, listen and relate to other people. They can read body language, are thoughtful, have a healthy sense of self-esteem, continually engage with their employees, and are commited to creating a healthy, sustainable company culture.

The more self-aware you are as a leader, the better. That’s because if you understand why you respond or think the way you do, you can improve your decision-making and communicate more effectively with others (you can read more about this in my last blog post).

Here are 11 questions to ask that can boost your self-awareness and improve your leadership skills:

  1. How much do you know about “soft skills,” aka people skills? Which skills do you possess?
  2. Has a boss or mentor ever said anything negative about your people skills?
  3. Does your boss have horrible, OK, or awesome people skills? How does it affect your relationship?
  4. Do you ever stop yourself and ask, “Why do I feel this way?” when you are about to react strongly to a situation?
  5. Do you think of yourself as a “people person?” Do others?
  6. What people skills would your boss, employees, or team members say you possess?
  7. Do you place more emphasis on money, success, and power than developing healthy relationships?
  8. Are you comfortable asking for and receiving feedback?
  9. Do you ask for input and then ignore what you hear?
  10. Do you care what other people think of you?
  11. Are you happy? How can you improve your happiness?

At the end of the day, being a good leader is not that hard. It might take some work, but the effort will reap tremendous results. What steps do you regularly take to improve your leadership skills?
