The Real Reason the Voice Behind Kermit the Frog Got Fired

Last month, Kermit the Frog got fired.

Well, the voice behind Kermit, Steve Whitmire, got fired. Much has been written about what happened between Whitmire, Lisa and Brian Henson, and the director. The truth is, we’ll never know what really happened.

What we do know is this: They weren’t communicating well. Their perceptions of what was happening was clouding everything. Emotions took over, and the facts were thrown aside.

How do I know this? A lot of emails were being sent back and forth. That alone shows they weren’t listening to – or understanding – each other. Misunderstanding leads to strong emotions, like anger and resentment.

When we lead with emotions, we get away from the facts. The leaders we like to follow are the ones who can keep emotion out of it. They talk only about the facts.

One way to stick to the facts is by asking these three brilliant questions (hat tip to comedian Craig Ferguson by way of entrepreneur Justin Bariso):

Does it need to be said?

Does it need to be said by you?

Does it need to be said now?

If you think your emotions are holding you back as a leader, it could be worthwhile to get a baseline of your emotional intelligence (EQ).
