Why Kind Leaders Don’t Just Survive – They Thrive
Imagine you’re in a big meeting with your entire team. You open your mouth and say something embarrassing. You immediately wish you could take it back. A few minutes later, your top salesperson shares information that was not yet ready for public consumption.
After the meeting, you pull that salesperson aside. “We all make mistakes,” you say. “Don’t worry about it, because you did a great job handling the situation.”
Then you walk down the hall to your office, berating yourself the entire time. “I can’t believe what I said in that meeting! That was so stupid of me. I know better!”
Do you see what just happened? You did not extend the same kindness to yourself that you showed for the salesperson.
Showing kindness and compassion to yourself and others is a critical yet undervalued leadership skill. When you are kind and compassionate, your heart rate and breathing slows. You can think clearer, make better decisions and reach your full potential.

Notice your critical self-talk. When you say something unkind to yourself, make a point of telling yourself “stop.” It is effective and simple.
