5 Interview Questions that Determine a Great Company Fit
Any company’s greatest asset is undoubtedly its people, which is why the hiring process can be so complicated. If you want to improve your hiring process by making much more mindful, deliberate decisions over who to hire, you need to start asking interview questions to find people with the same values as your company.
The five best questions to ask are:
Why do you want to work for us?
The way someone answers this will tell you if they have the same values as you and if they will fit in with your company culture. If you have a startup, you want someone who is comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity, very resourceful, flexible, and a great problem solver.
If, on the other hand, you are the CEO of a non-profit, you want someone who is driven by the greater good, can do a lot with very little, and can motivate others to join your cause.
What motivates you to come into work every day?
Maybe someone is motivated by learning something new, while someone else is motivated by exceeding their sales number. As long as their answer resonates with your company culture, you’ll know you’ve found a great fit.
Who is your role model?
This is such a great question, because a person’s role model tells you a lot about what personality traits and behaviors they find important. Though both are fantastic role models, Mother Teresa is very different role from Ariana Huffington!
What’s your superpower?
Looking for a new version of “What’s your greatest strength?” This is it. We’re talking about a real superpower here, of course, not a theoretical one like being able to fly. Encourage the person you’re interviewing to be honest about a key strength that helps a person really stand out and make a difference.
How do your colleagues help make you better?
Nope, this not a trick question – it actually shows how self-aware someone is, an important element of emotional intelligence. It is also a new way to ask someone what their weaknesses are, because he or she will talk about what they’re not good at and what kind of skills or traits they seek out in others.
