How to Stay Healthy And Boost Your Energy During the Holidays
Beginning at Thanksgiving and stretching right through to the New Year, the holidays are a time of too much food, too much booze, too much sugar, and too much stress. Here’s how to stay healthy AND boost your energy levels during the holiday season:
Go outside and get active
Sunlight and fresh air boost energy, but in the winter when the days are shorter and colder, it’s so easy to fall into hibernation mode. Resist the urge to spend a lot of time indoors, especially because the air can be a cocktail of dust, chemicals from cleaning agents, and other allergens and irritants.
Instead, go outside for a brisk walk when you feel your energy lagging, even if it’s only for 10 minutes. Commit to regularly participating in outdoor activities, like hiking, ice skating, sledding or tubing, or cross country skiing.
Drink a little coffee and a lot of water
Coffee boosts alertness, energy, and the ability to focus – and it’s full of antioxidants and a source of dietary fiber. Of course, you should also drink water – everyone know that ! – but did you know that if you drink a glass of water before you eat, you’ll have less room for food?
Stay away from the buffet table
This might seem so simple, but it works. When you’re at a party, don’t stand within arm’s reach of the food spread. It is human nature to eat what’s in front of us, whether we’re hungry or not. Hang out on the other side of the room and find fun people to talk to so you’ll stay there.
Protect your immune system
To keep viruses at bay, you have to keep your immune system running in tip top form. Get plenty of sleep, continue to exercise regularly, avoid sugary foods, moderate alcohol consumption, wash your hands before preparing food or eating, and up your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.
When you’re really feeling stressed, laugh. It is incredibly good for your health: it relaxes your whole body, boosts your immune system, triggers the release of feel-good endorphins, and protects your heart, among other things.
Staying healthy adds to our happiness and this adds to our success both personally and professionally. We can do many things this month to make our month a successful and productive month. What else do you do to stay healthy during the holidays?
