We Need More Niksen in Our Lives

A past client who is Dutch sent me an article and this note:

“When I was a little boy and my mother thought we were being lazy, she would call us ‘niksen.’ And now, look at this article! We are supposed to ‘niksen’. See mom, we were ahead of the times!”

Niksen, you see, is a Dutch term that means doing nothing. If you are like most of my clients, you cannot fathom doing nothing.

I met with a client the other day who falls into that category. She just finished a really big project that lasted months and required precision and perfection. She’s also a mom and a wife. As you might imagine, she is beyond exhausted. Yet during this project, she gave her team a day off, but not herself.

Niksen is just what she needs. It can give you more energy, help keep your life balanced, improve the quality of your sleep and increase your productivity and creativity.

This is deeper than meditation. This is doing nothing. And it’s hard to do.

So I have a challenge for you. Can you do nothing? Set a timer on your phone for 10-15 minutes, challenge yourself to embrace nothing and see what happens.

I’m taking this challenge with you, too. For the next week, I’m challenging myself to do nothing for 15 minutes every day. No social media, no checking email, no talking, no meditation, no yoga. I will allow myself to do nothing.
