Love Thy Neighbor: 3 Ways to Increase Your Empathy and Compassion

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” – Fred Rogers

Mr. Rogers’ mother was right. It is incredibly powerful to see displays of empathy and compassion. It is even more powerful when we are the ones showing empathy and compassion to those we work with, live with and play with. It will change their lives – and yours.

If this is an area where you already excel, you are all set.

If you struggle to excel in this area, you can create a simple, daily plan to show your care and compassion for the people around you.

Here are three ideas to get you started:

Practice a daily loving kindness meditation. Loving kindness means wishing kindness, compassion, love, and safety to someone else. It is my favorite meditation.

Each day at work, ask two or three people how they’re doing. Don’t walk past them as you ask. Stop, look them in the eye and listen to their answer. And don’t forget to put away your phone.

Pick a local, national or global issue and talk with others about it to better understand a different perspective. Keep an open mind, and listen. If the issue is homelessness, talk to volunteers at a homeless shelter. If the issue is immigration, talk to an immigrant to learn about their motivation for moving to the US.
