The 3 Best Assessments for Leaders

It’s been proven time and again: Successful leaders have high Emotional Intelligence (EQs). The good news is that EQ can absolutely be improved. The bad news is that it can’t be improved if you don’t know where you’re starting.

With that premise in mind, here are three of the best assessments for leaders:

EQ-i 2.0

I consider the EQ-i  2.0 the “granddaddy” of EQ assessments. It measures five core areas: self-perception, self-expression, interpersonal, decision-making, and stress management. Each of these five areas are scored and broken down into three additional sub-scores, thus providing valuable insights.


These are two versions of an assessment that identifies your behaviors and how they impact your leadership.  They hone in on how you behave and show up at work. The results will help ensure that you show up with the intention you want to have as a leader.

Driving Forces

This is a values assessment that focuses on why we do things and why we don’t. Taking it helps you understand your top motivations, so you can steer clear of anything that doesn’t motivate you. You will then know why sometimes your yes means yes and sometimes it doesn’t.

I just did a Driving Forces debrief with someone who dreaded attending committee meetings at a nonprofit organization. Though she was dedicated to (and enthusiastic about) this nonprofit’s mission, she was not motivated by the committee’s focus and her tasks. It was a big a-ha moment for her.

No matter how much you may try to be excited about something, if it’s not in your value system, you can’t do it well or for an extended period of time. This is why assessments are important for leaders. They can help increase your self-awareness – your EQ.
