Like many of you, I spend too much time sitting during the workday, whether it’s at my desk, in a conference room, or in my car. When I began developing back problems a few years ago, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be great to try a walking meeting?
I knew one of my clients was an avid walker, so I called him up and suggested we change our next meeting to a walking meeting. He quickly agreed.
Both of us were surprised by how much we accomplished in just 30 minutes. We decided to continue our walking meetings, and now they last 1 to 2 hours.
Today, I regularly hold walking meetings with my clients. Here’s why they’re so beneficial:

- Increased blood flow to your brain improves communication
- Mood and well-being improve significantly
Is it any surprise that the late Steve Jobs was an avid fan of walking meetings?
Let’s not forget about what too much sitting means for our health. Research has found that people who sit for more than six hours a day are 40 percent more likely to die within 15 years than people who sit for fewer than three hours a day. That’s pretty sobering.
Meanwhile, just 30 minutes of walking can reduce your risk for dementia, breast and colon cancer, and heart disease. I have found that during walking meetings, I feel calmer. Because you breathe more deeply when moving your body, stress goes down.
Naturally, holding a walking meeting with a large group is not feasible. Mine are typically one-on-one, but you could try it with small groups of four or five people.
